Beauty Preneur: Rachel Reid

Your product makes makeup application so much more convenient for women. What else distinguishes Subtl Beauty from other brands?

I believe the women we are building our products for are underserved. So much of what the beauty industry is pumping out right now is catered to women who are super passionate about makeup. This is evident in both their packaging and formulation design; 40-shade palettes, high-intensity pigments, etc. There’s a group of women who don’t really care for the hype, they’re more focused on exploring, climbing the corporate ladder, reaching new heights and goals. They just need a brand that understands their needs and challenges that come with a busy, on-the-go lifestyle. We intend to be that brand for those women.

Have you made mistakes while building your beauty brand, and if so, can you share and describe how you readjusted and got back on track?

I think this is an interesting question. I’ve made mistakes, I fail at something almost every single day but I look at it like a muscle—the more you exercise it, the stronger you become. Growing up, I used to be so terrified to make a mistake or to let anyone know I was imperfect, but now I see it as a tool; building blocks for strength, as cliche as that sounds.

Currently what is your strategy for promoting your business?

Our marketing efforts have been primarily focused around digital because that’s what I know really well. Someone recently posted a YouTube review of our product and referred to it as “That Instagram Makeup Stack,” it made me laugh but it was a proud moment because we are such a small team, operating on such a small budget. It’s good to know we are having such a big digital impact.

What challenges have you faced as an entrepreneur?

Entrepreneurs face challenges daily and that’s part of the excitement, but the hardest challenges I’ve faced have been the internal, mindset stuff. I don’t think it ever goes away but you just get better at recognizing it and ignore it.

What advice do you have for other aspiring entrepreneurs in the beauty industry?

Just start. I have so many people tell me all of the great business ideas they have or things they want to do, but ideas are a dime a dozen. The magic is in actually doing the work.
